Probiotic Bacteria: The Good Bacteria
Bacteria sounds like such an ugly word to most people. It conjures up images of ugly dirty living things that cause disease and spread like wildfire. Sorry to have put that image into your head, because now I'm going to ask you to lose that image completely. Not all bacteria is bad. As a matter of fact, some is essential for our health.
Our digestive tract is full of bacteria. Some are not good, but the majority of the microorganisms living inside us are “friendly bacteria” which can help us digest food, and starve out the harmful bacteria that constantly threaten to take over. These are “probiotic bacteria”, probiotic meaning “for life”.
Probiotic bacteria occur naturally within us, but there are some outside influences that can cause the level of these bacteria to be below what it should. Taking antibiotics (“against life”) may kill off bad bacteria causing an infection, but they also kill off many of the good bacteria in our systems. Chlorinated water can have the same bacteria decreasing affect.
We can reestablish the level of good bacteria in our system by taking in probiotic bacteria. These microorganisms are found in some fermented foods such as sour milk (like kefir) and yogurt, sauerkraut, and other fermented vegetables. Fish might also contain probiotics, particularly raw fish. Diets rich in these foods ensure a good level of probiotics in the system.
Since many of us rarely drink sour milk or eat sauerkraut, probiotics have been added to some foods recently to give us a bit more of this type of microorganism. Probiotics yogurt is one of the first foods to which additional probiotic bacteria were added. Since yogurt naturally contains probiotics, adding some extra in makes sense.
Eating probiotics yogurt on a daily basis can help to boost your immune system. You can avoid getting those colds and flues, as you are more able to fight off viruses and bacteria that invade your system. Probiotics yogurt can also aid in digestion and help to regulate that function, helping to avoid diarrhea and constipation.
Probiotic bacteria is also available in the form of a supplement. Various strains and species of the bacteria are cultivated in natural foods and then sold in the form of powder or caplets to be taken every day. This is one way to be very aware of exactly how much probiotics you are getting in a day.
If you are looking for a way to improve your overall health and increase your resistance to illness, increasing your intake of probiotic bacteria is a great way to do it. Whether you opt for probiotic blend supplements or isolated probiotic pills, or to eat probiotics yogurt on a daily basis, you will feel the results as your body's beneficial bacteria levels are restored to their proper levels.
