Using Prebiotics and Probiotics Can Lead To Greater Health
The human body is such a wonderful chemistry lab, mixing up ingredients that can be both beneficial as well as harmful to your overall health. Fundamentally, the body produces good and bad bacteria in your intestinal tract that balance each other. However, modern-day diets, and the absolute stress living in modern-day times, can throw your body’s chemical mix all a flutter. This flutter is referred to as dysbiosis, a condition found in people suffering from yeast infections, irritable bowels as a well as rheumatoid arthritis. Yes, even arthritis.
Ironically, the cause for this condition is modern-day science – in the form of the many, and varied, antibiotics created since the 19th century when health research professionals accepted the fact many sicknesses were caused by bad bacteria. The search began for drugs that could combat not only the symptoms produced by bad bacteria, but possibly cure the disease itself.
Unfortunately, as mankind met the challenge for artificial sources to fend off everyday sicknesses and disease, the accumulated effect for consuming these antibiotics also has been the destruction of naturally appearing good bacteria in one’s own body. However, there exist elements that can help restore the balance between good and bad bacteria in your digestive track called prebiotics and probiotics.
Prebiotics
These are carbohydrate fibers that are non-digestive. These elements aid in providing healthy growth of good bacteria in your body and are found in oligosaccharides, resistant fibers and fermentable fibers. Prebiotics are naturally found in foods such as whole grains, legumes and certain fruits. Although research is currently focusing on the benefits from prebiotics in one’s diet, it also has been associated with helping reduce constipation, heart disease, diverticulitis and Type 2 diabetes.
Probiotics
These are live microorganisms that are naturally present in one’s body but, as discussed earlier, can be destroyed by use of antibiotics. These microorganisms are considered to be helpful bacteria that battle bad bacteria helping keep one’s digestive tract healthy. Although probiotics can be found in certain cultured dairy products like yogurt or kefir, most are consumed in the form of dietary supplements as pills, liquids or powders.
What do they do?
Prebiotics work toward helping the friendly probiotics work efficiently. These elements have been proven to help lower cholesterol and triglycerides, two important factors to monitor for maintaining a healthy heart. Studies are currently concentrating on just how prebiotics aid in one’s immunity system, helping to increase white blood cells.
Prebiotics can be found, naturally, in particular plants like herbs and fruits and, practically, any food containing sugars.
Did you know the meaning of the word “probiotics?” Simply put, the word means “for life,” so a simple answer to what it does is to “promote life,” or help keep one healthy.
Although these live organisms appear naturally in the human body, much research has been conducted lately suggesting using probiotic supplements can help one’s overall health, specifically in the digestive tract. This research has shown evidence supplementing one’s diet with these friendly probiotics can help fight off diarrhea, vaginal yeast and urinary tract infections, reduce irritable bowel syndrome, and reduce bladder cancer reoccurrence as well as help fight off other intestinal infections.
As with anything medical, always consult your doctor before trying any procedure or supplement.
