What Is A Probiotic?
In response to the question „what is probiotic?”, the term „probiotic” itself means „for life.” Probiotics are microorganisms that are believed to be healthy or to confer specific health benefits on the host. They are taken in the form of a dietary supplement, or in foods that contain them such as yogurt or other fermented dairy drinks.
These „friendly bacteria” are similar to the beneficial bacteria that grows naturally in the human digestive tract. It is important for there to be a proper balance of this type of bacteria to counteract the other unwanted kinds of bacteria that may be found there also.
What do probiotics do?
When the probiotic supplement or food is taken, the microorganisms enter the gut and are presumed to help to reestablish the naturally occuring gut flora. They can help to hinder or even halt the growth and activity of harmful bacteria, yeast, fungi or parasites found in the gut.
What is a probiotic formula?
There are many different species and strains of microorganisms that fall under the category of probiotics. All of these are not created equal, and different strains come with varying effects. The purpose of a probiotic formula is to have a combination of the best strains or species to treat a given illness or to promote certain health benefits.
When are probiotics recommended?
Doctors sometimes recommend probiotics after a patient has been through a course of antibiotics. This can aid in the treatment of candidiasis, and help prevent the diarrhea that sometimes follows this type of medication. While taking antibiotics, many of the good bacteria is killed along with the harmful, which allows some other harmful bacteria to thrive.
Probiotics are also recommended in complementary or alternative medicine. Most regular doctors still do not make much use of probiotics, as scientific backing has not yet been found to warrant their more broad use. However, they have still been used by many, with the numbers increasing rapidly in recent years, and these people have felt the benefits.
What health benefits do probiotics provide?
Probiotics are recommended for strengthening the immune system, fight against certain infections or illnesses such as vaginal infections, some skin infections, diarrhea, to fight allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach and respiratory infections in children.
Some other claims are made that probiotics can help suppress excessive alcohol intake, lower cholesterol and relieve stress. Some even feel that the way in which these probiotics assist in their digestion helps contribute to weight loss.
Although there is not a lot of research and backing on some of the claims made about probiotics, the science makes sense, and many people have experienced the benefits of taking a probiotic formula, either in the form of a capsule, powder, or just in the foods they are found in.
